When it comes to window treatments, it can be easy for the average homeowner to get overwhelmed with the amount of choices there are out there. It’s important that before you make any sort of décor decision in your home, you are knowledgeable about the choices out there, as this will help you make a more informed decision, and will ensure you aren’t missing anything important. I’d like to, in this article, give you a brief rundown on some of the most popular shades blinds shutters and curtains that are available.

Sheer Curtain – The sheer curtain is a favourite amongst homeowners everywhere, and while they don’t provide much in the way of privacy and insulation, they will give your home an incredibly airy feel, allowing the cool evening breezes to blow through your house in the middle of summer.

Roman Blinds – When choosing between blinds and shades, many people prefer the privacy that a roman blind will provide. Roman blinds give your home a classic feel, and have been used for hundreds of years to great effect. A roman blind is basically a length of material that rolls up in pleats, folding behind itself at the top of your window when not in use, and laying flat against the window when it is down.

Panel Track Blinds – This is a new style of blind that is getting rave reviews in the world of window treatments. It works in a similar fashion to vertical blinds that we all know and love, however the individual slats are actually larger panels, and fold back behind each other when the blind is open. This style of blind is particularly useful for large sliding doors, and can even be used as room dividers.

Pinch Pleat Drapes – This is a curtain, however at the top the material is pinched together at regular intervals. This creates a pleated look that travels right down the length of the curtain, giving it a fullness and nostalgic robustness that looks great in classic traditional style settings

Plantation Shutters – These shutters usually have larger slats and are particularly useful for large windows. More often than not, they are installed on the outside of the home, and are made from thick slats of wood, giving your home a rustic charm reminiscent of the plantation farms of old.

Mini Blinds – These blinds are also known as venetian blinds, and basically consist of horizontal slats that can be pulled up via a cord. These blinds are one of the most inexpensive styles available, and for a family on a budget, allow them to cover all the windows in their home for a minimum cost.

We have only touched the tip of the iceberg here as far as blinds, shades and shutters are concerned, but in future articles I will be exploring this vast world in greater depth. Hopefully this information will help you in your quest to make your home a more comfortable and attractive place to live.

Blackout Blinds - These are used in areas where you want to block out the light entering the room, for example bedrooms where people or children might need to sleep during the day, or a room facing a street with lights at night. Many also serve as sound insulation. They are available in many different styles, colors and sizes, and will fit any type of windows, including slanted skylights.
