Elegant and stylish are only two of the adjectives that describe a glass dining table. If these words define you as well then that is the type of dining table for you. I propose to give you here a little guide to help you decide which glass top dining table would best suit your needs.
Opting for a glass dining table means first of all that you are taking the strength of the glass into consideration. For a large table, that you will use regularly, if the glass is resting directly on the table legs, it is important to ensure a thickness of at least 10 mm or 3/8“. For a small table the thickness can be less but should never be below 5 mm or 3/16”. If the glass is attached (glued) on a panel it is safe to have a glass that is not as thick.
A classic, rectangular, glass dining room table is always fashionable, but today you are no longer bound by shapes and forms. Glass tables today can very imaginative and original in their shape, their colors and their function. One model we looked at was available in as many as 10 colors, each competing with the others in brightness, and originality. Furthermore there are some round glass tops tables with a rotating top (genre lazy susan) which provide an easy way to pass the dishes, or some multifunction tables that serve as coffee tables when shortened and as dining tables when raised. There is also a large variety in the way the glass can be cut, some will have a bevel edge while others will be rounded. Another thing to consider will be the room lighting as the glass will play with light like no other material can, it will give you a totally different look. A room with a glass table looks larger as space opens up when we see through things.
As for sizes, the size of your room will determine what size table you can fit, but even glass tables can have extension leaves. Even if you have a small space you can still enjoy having a glass table. In fact glass tables often give an impression of openness in small spaces.
One more little word of advice, a glass top dining table is great looking, but does not look so good with a thousand finger prints, so if you have young children this might not be the best choice for a few years.
