Fall, winter and even spring can be harsh on the roof of a house, but most of the time we feel protected from all the water because we have rain gutters. However it is important to keep them free of leaves and other debris to ensure that they will perform well. Gutter covers of all sorts have been devised and used with fairly good results.
A few years ago a company Quality Edge has come up with an innovative gutter cover called TruGuard that saves homeowners a lot of worries and work to keep gutters at their peak performance.
These rain gutter covers have a very unique design, I am using here the drawing from their site to illustrate how different the TruGuard covers are, they do not have any holes so it impossible for even the smallest leaves to get in. Water rolls down and is captured by a very discreet opening and never runs to the ground even in the heaviest downpours.
In this closed system, rain water follows the natural laws of capillarity. It follows the surface of the cover, all the way to the edge that turns back into the gutter, a little like when a full glass of water is slightly tilted and the water runs down the glass instead of splashing out.
Composed of an aluminum membrane that is installed under the second row of shingles, the gutter covers run alongside the roof to the gutter where they lay atop the gutter to cover it. The surface of the gutter cover is rigged with lips (or rims) that disperse water laterally to form a sheet of water. It is an incredible sight and when you see it work you have to wonder how it does. The rain water moves in sheets to the nose and is engulfed into the gutter without any leaves or debris.
From a distance the addition of the gutter covers to the gutter gives the impression of a cornice (they are available in any color that you might need) and adds beauty to the home. As far as I am concerned mixing function and beauty gets a thumbs up every time.
