Home Decor Color Trends For 2010

As we turn the corner of the year and embark into 2010, let's look at the colors that will lead this year.

Since 1963 designers for fashion and home, print and advertising, have been using the pantone color selector in their work, and have turned to Pantone for news and trends about color. Every year the company put out a chart with color trends, and I must say that so far they have been masters of the crystal ball.

According to the oracle, 2010 will be colorful, but the most important to note is a return to pastel colors, a purple that tends towards lavender, a dust rose, a soft dried herbs green, with a couple of stronger bright colors like a vibrant yellow, a vivid red and an exciting turquoise.

So here is my presentation of this year's color trends with a few products in the chosen colors.

Turquoise: PANTONE 15-5519 is a fresh and bright turquoise it was chosen as the top 1 choice for 2010

turquoise a hot trend for 2010

Turquoise is a color characteristic of the 50's, a period of opulence after the war. With our economy in shambles a little stepping back in time might be just what we need. Pantone describes their choice as "colorful yet calming." I am happy for the choice as it is a flexible color that fit in nicely with browns, grays, navy, black and white.

As for those of you who just cannot get enough of retro decoration, then Pantone has just given you a gift. Check out the retro turquoise Spider Clock at Amazon $ 29.99, or the Blissliving Home Mallory 12'' x 12'' Pillow $50.00 at Walmart online only (not available in stores.)

Tomato Purée: PANTONE 18-1661 a very vibrant yet subdued red

For some red is an abomination and for others it is the color of seduction, warm and exciting. One thing is sure, love it or hate it, red is never ignored. If you choose this color for your home decor, you should know that it is a symbolic color, but also a traditional color. It stimulates appetite, that is why you so frequently see it in restaurants and kitchens. It is also sensuous, (enough said.) One word of caution red can quickly dominate all the other colors in your home and make other cherished objects disappear from view. Use it carefully. The  Pendant Red Glass $ 79 light (shown on image above) is available from Lighting by Gregory. Le Creuset Apple Casserole - Red $115 is available @ KitchenU.com offers you free shipping on orders above $69.95.

Fusion Coral: PANTONE 16-1543 a quiet healthy look with all variations of coral colors

Coral is a pink infused with some yellow to give the glow of healthy living to your surroundings, inspired by the pastels of the 40's and early 50's. Perhaps this is our way of being green, by recycling the colors from sixty years ago. Tululah Designs Coral & Blush Print Napkin Set of 4 $19.95. Salt Crystal Lamp Air Purifier available in a variety of styles and prices from $10.00 up.

Violet: PANTONE 16-3320 This is a soft violet close to a lavender, sometimes with a little more saturation

Lavender sings to my soul, I love the fields, I love the fragrance and the color  is soft and adds a touch of femininity to a house. You can dress your bed with lavender, you can use it as beautiful accents that combine lavender and deeper purples, and always end up with a delicate room. The Purple bean bag chair $70 is from Amazon

Tuscany: PANTONE 16-1219 this is close to what we know as taupe with a leaning towards brown

tuscani pantone

Tuscani is a soft brownish taupe, it can be used for large surfaces like walls or carpeting and complement with striking color accessories. It will always give you a sophisticated look with a feeling of serenity.

Aurora: PANTONE 12-0642 is a fresh yellow inviting and resembling a morning sun

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when I say yellow? If you said little chicks or the sun, congratulations you are fairly normal! Yellow is by definition the sunlight. It is warm and luminous, it accentuates everything that it covers. It is a symbol of success and prosperity.

Amparo Blue: PANTONE 18-3945 another soft color for this year this blue is akin to a jean soft blue

Since the middle ages blue has been the color of evasion, freedom, calm and serenity. It has limitless possibilities in home decor. Easy to find shades and hues to mix and match. The amazing color shower is by Hansa and can be changed to be any of the colors discussed here.

Neat info, thanks for sharing. After decorating my little 1bd condo here in Chiangmai, I discovered I wasn’t completely thrilled with the outcome. However, after reading your articles, I got a few ideas on how to properly use the colors I have, and will be able to make some easy remedies to make it look the way I hoped for in the start. Thanks!

In this real estate market, world-wide, using the proper decorating techniques and latest color schemes can only help. Now I have a good reference source.
