Choosing a loft bed for a small room is a very smart way to maximize the space you have. Whether you are furnishing a child room, or a student dorm room, or even you are starting out on your own and only have a small apartment a loft bed is ideal for any of these situations. Here are a few tips that will make it easier for you to choose the right one.

First a word of caution to all parents considering such a bed for a child. Safety first, a loft bed is not appropriate for a young child. How old should a child be before sleeping in a loft bed is really up to you, but younger than five or six year old kids should not sleep in this kind of bed nor should they sleep in the top bunk of a bunk bed.

Here are what you need to look out for when buying a loft bed:

Be careful not to buy a bed that is too wide and would take most of the room’s floor space. Sleeping comfortably is important but having space to move around is as necessary, remember that you will still have to bend down to walk under the bed. Check the height of the bed to be sure it will work for you.

Don’t choose the best lit area by default. If you can put the bed in a corner it might work out better. Ensure that the location of your bed does not obstruct electric outlets you might need or return air vents that need to be kept cleared.

To save space, if you use a loft bed in a one room apartment that will also serve as living room you might consider a loft with a futon on the lower part, specially if you like to entertain.

You can use a loft bed with a desk built in the lower part.

You can find loft beds in many large department stores. Some stores like Walmart may not have any in stock but offer them online and will ship free of charge to your local store. Ikea is another source for great looking lofts at affordable prices.

If you buy your bed online, order sheets and other bedding at the same time, to save on shipping.

We spend a third of our life in a bed, don’t skimp on quality and think you are saving money. Buy the best quality you can afford, as comfort is crucial for a good night sleep.

If you have back problems, get advice from a doctor as to whether or not this is a good idea for you. Avoid used beds, mattresses and bedding have a limited lifetime, and old bedding is know to house mites.
