Milled Log Homes

Log cabins can be of two main types. Milled log, also known as manufactured log, and handcrafted log homes. Handcrafted log homes are typically larger logs, ranging in diameter from twelve to fifteen inches. They are hand peeled, leaving a rougher finish. And each piece of the home is individually cut. These homes are lovely, but they are also more expensive than the milled log homes.

Milled log homes are very commonly six by eight inch logs or eight by eight inch logs. The most common profile is the D-log. Square logs and round on round, or double D, are also very common in the industry. On a six by eight log, the eight inch is the height of the log per row.

The logs are milled with either a Swedish Cope cut or a double tongue and groove stack. The stack height of a log, is actually about 6 3/4 inches because the Swedish Cope or double tongue and groove (depending on the log style selected) consumes the 1 1/4 inches in the overlapping of the cut.

Which ever type someone selects, log cabins have uniqueness that no other homes possess.
