The kitchen holds a special place in every home, it is not only a place to prepare foods, and most of us enjoy food, but oftentimes it is a place where meals are eaten, where parents and kids share a little unstructured time, it is a place where we tend to assemble a few times a day. Today’s kitchen can no longer be just thrown together, we have to think on how it will function.

Planning the layout of a kitchen is a question of areas

  • Setting up a kitchen must follow one simple rule : we can count four activity centers or areas in every kitchen.
  • Storing (cupboards, pantries, refrigerator and freezer.)
  • Preparation of dry foods (counter tops, islands, tables.)
  • Cleaning and washing (sink)
  • Cooking (oven, stove, microwave)

A well designed kitchen will allow for easy passage from one area to any of the others, while avoiding contact between hot and cold, electricity and water. We must therefore not only consider ergonomic concepts, but safety and how to adapt to the space available, when planning a functional kitchen.

The first kitchen at the top of the post was really planned and research, I can tell you that the chairs were designed by Arne Jacobsen. These chairs are wonderful and anyone who chooses those for their kitchen has done her homework.
