While we would all prefer to have more space many of us have to deal with the space we have and to the best we can. Particularly in large cities, apartment bathrooms tend to be small. With a small bathroom it becomes ever more so important to have a functional, well designed space. Fixtures and interior designers have taken a good look at this problem and improved conditions for all the homeowners who have to suffer a small bathroom.

What can you do to make the most of your bathroom space and to make the room look bigger.

Inspired by kitchen furniture, designers of bathroom furniture have adapted to designing for small spaces. For years the vanities were too deep, now the depth of bathroom vanities is conceived in a way to optimize the space. Furniture in the bathroom is generally available in narrower and smaller pieces that can integrate perfectly in small bathrooms.

Sinks have evolved too. Vessel sinks have made an apparition and opened up space. In a smaller space we can now choose low depth vessel sinks with a closed vanity underneath. Another way to open up valuable space is to use a corner sink.

But the largest item has always been the tub or shower. In small rooms in the past the only possibility was to either give up the space or do away with the tub all together. Although the shower is still better for space saving you can now enjoy a small tub if you want to. You can find bathtubs with asymmetric angles that might offer a better fit. For people who prefer a quick shower the Italian shower gives an impression of space by removing the separation between the ground and the shower pan.

If your bathroom is really confined and does not receive much light you might consider using glass blocks instead of a wall. Light from an adjacent room will filter in and make the space look larger.

A few tips to create the illusion of space in a small bathroom

Choose large bathroom floor tiles, at least 15x15 up to 24x24, use the same tiles on the floor and the walls, but do not tile everything, if you use tiles as your bathroom flooring then do not tile the walls.

Avoid darker colors or colors that are too bright. Cool light colors are the best for this situation. Warm or dark color tend to shrink a place.
