The Holydays are approaching and some of us are already thinking on how we will decorate the house and perhaps even how we will set the table. Traditionally many of us will use a table cloth perhaps it is time to pay a little attention to table runners.
What are table runners?
Simply put they are an over the table cloth strip of fabric, linen like paper, bamboo, or any other material about 15 inches wide and placed on a reception table. Table runners are often used at weddings and other large receptions but can also be used in the home for several reasons. First it makes a great decoration when you have company and it is inexpensive. Secondly it is practical to use a table runner. If you use an expensive delicate table cloth a table runner will protect it and keep clean longer, table runners are easier to wash and to iron than table cloths. If however your old table cloth is not as fresh as it once was and might have some spots, a table runner will hide the spots and give a longer life to your favorite table cloth. Table runners can accentuate the best and hide the worst.
I mentioned the use of table runners for large gatherings but a nice table runner can be use for an intimate dining experience as well. Table runners can be in varied sizes and the size does not have to match your table, in fact any size can work. A table runner can be placed in the center of a bare table or buffet showing wood on both sides, but for a more pleasing look it is best to have at least 7 to 8 inches on either side.

Styles can be as diverse and you will have no difficulty finding table runners that fit your decor or the occasion. You can change table runners frequently, some people use a different one for each holiday. Special wedding tables can use table runners in silver or gold effectively, use color to your advantage, make it your own.

You can buy your table runners already made, but if you are handy they are easy to make, you can use any material you want, even an old table cloth that is no longer serviceable. Cut the length that you need and hem it. The possibilities are endless. Another easy way to make your own is to buy linen like paper in a roll, even vinyl can make a striking table runner, many patterns and colors are available.

These table runners can really dress up a table, and you have given me some good ideas, I have some old tablecloths that I cannot use any more that I could cut up to make a runner. It seems like a great way to keep it around longer. Thanks
